Before Road to Hire, I felt lost.

I maintained a high GPA at my competitive magnet school. I was always at the top of my class. But while I had the drive and desire to attend college, college was not an option for me. I became a mother at a young age — so right after high school, I put my dream of going to college on hold and began working to support my family instead. I worked in a restaurant as a hostess, as a receptionist for a staffing agency, and in a furniture store. While those jobs helped, I was extremely limited, both financially and career-wise. Moving up in the latter two jobs required a college education, which I knew was even less of a possibility at that point in my life.

I first heard about the program through a friend, Celio Reyes, who encouraged me to apply. This was it: I knew what I wanted and where I wanted to be, and this opportunity was exactly what I needed to land a career where I could thrive — and provide a better life for my family and myself.

Road to Hire helped me develop the professional skills I needed so I could continue to grow in any career path. We were introduced to some of the most influential leaders in Charlotte, like Ric Elias (co-founder and CEO of Red Ventures) and Hugh McColl (former Chairman and CEO of Bank of America), who gave us insight into what qualities shape a leader and lead to success. I also learned the technical skills needed to become a Jr. Web Developer. The program was extremely immersive, intense and fast-paced, but we had an awesome teacher, advisors, and others to help us along the way.

Currently, I am working as a Jr. Web Developer here at Red Ventures as part of a product team. (That means we build tools for Red Ventures to use in-house.) I am continuing to expand my knowledge with help from my team members. And I am finally doing what I love. To anyone thinking the program sounds too good to be true, you’re right: Road to Hire is awesome. But we do ask something from you. We ask that you take this opportunity, work extremely hard, and never forget to give back to those around you. I don’t consider it a price to pay, but if you do, then it is a small price to pay for a chance to change your life and meet people who are truly invested in your success.
